Students’ pressure sometimes comes from their parents. Most parents are well meaning, but some of them aren’t very helpful with the problems their sons and daughters have in adjusting to college. And a few of them seem to go out of their way to add to their children’s difficulties.
For one thing, parents are often not aware of the kinds of problems their children face. They don’t realize that the competition is keener, that the required standards of work are higher, and that their children may not be prepared for the change. Accustomed to seeing A’s and B’s on the high school report cards, they may be upset when their children’s first semester college grades are below that level. At their kindest, they may gently inquire why John or Mary isn’t doing better, whether he or she is trying as hard as he or she should, and so on. At their worst, they may threaten to take their children out of college, or cut off funds.
Sometimes parents regard their children as extensions of themselves and think it only right and natural that they determine what their children do with their lives. In their involvement and identification with their children, they forget that everyone is different, and that each person must develop in his own her own way. They forget that their children, who are now young adults, must be the ones responsible for what they do and what they are.

You probably have noticed that people express similar ideas in different ways depending on the situation they are in. This is very natural. All languages have two general levels of usage: a formal level and an informal level. English is no exception. The difference in these two levels is the situation in which you use a particular level. Formal language is the kind of language you find in textbooks, reference books and in business letters. You would also use formal English in compositions and essays that you write in school. Informal language is used in conversation with colleagues, family members and friends, and when we write personal notes or letters to close friends. Formal language is different from informal language in several ways. First, formal language tends to be more polite. What we may find interesting is that it usually takes more words to be polite. For example, I might say to a friend or a family member “Close the door, please”, but to a stranger, I probably would say “Would you mind closing the door?” Another difference between formal and informal language is some of the vocabulary. There are bound to be some words and phrases that belong in formal language and others that are informal. Let’s say that I really like soccer. If I am talking to my friend, I might say “I am just crazy about soccer”, but if I were talking to my boss, I would probably say “I really enjoy soccer”.

For Americans, time is money. They say, "You only get so much time in this life: you'd better use it wisely." The future will not be better than the past or present, as Americans are trained to see things, unless people use their time for constructive activities. Thus, Americans admire a "well-organized" person, one who has a written list of things to do and a schedule for doing them. The ideal person is punctual and is considerate of other people's time. They do not waste people's time with conversation or other activity that has no visible beneficial outcome.
The American attitude toward time is not necessarily shared by others, especially non-Europeans. They are more likely to regard time as something that is simply there around them, not something they can use. One of the more difficult things many students must adjust to in the States is the notion that time must be saved whenever possible and used wisely every day
