Hello again and Happy Lantern Festival!
By the time you read this message, I bet you’ve already had Yuan xiao (元宵). One of the things I miss a lot about China is the food, especially all the tasty local specialities from Xi’an.
Here in London, as you probably know, we have China Town, where you can find quite a variety of Chinese food, but for some reason it never really tastes the same and is very expensive.
When I was studying at Keele University, most of the Chinese students cook almost all their meals; it’s cheaper and it’s tastier than eating out in the canteen. Of course, that is if you want to have Chinese.
Almost every city you go to here in Britain, you are guaranteed to find a Chinese restaurant. Most of the restaurants cook Cantonese food, so for a lot of us who come from the central and northern parts of China who like spicy food, then it’s a bit of a search.
Going out to eat is like a treat here. Not like in China where we pretty much go out to eat on a regular basis, simply because it’s relatively cheape and there are so many choices of food in any Chinese city; here in London, you’d be looking at spending about 30 pounds per person in an average restaurant, which is about 450 kuai. It is cheaper outside London, but still you simply can’t afford to go out to eat every day!
Apart from the famous fish and chips, you can find lots of different kinds of food from all around the world, Italian, French, Indian, Thai, Japanese, Korean, Spanish, Moroccan… anything and everything you can name. Just get your cash ready!
So what kind of food do you like eating? My favourite food is without any doubt Chinese, I’m also a big fan of Indian food and there are some very good Indian restaurants here in London.
